Object of the week: Tailgate
The tailgate is more than just the holder for the number plate. It closes the only lockable box of the standard vehicle (DXP, DXS, DX2, MaXX2) with the helmet compartment. The helmet compartment has changed its purpose somewhat over time. There is no room for modern full-face helmets in it, but the classic jet helmets without a chin section can be stowed away well in it.
However, the tailgate is also important as protection for the technical connections housed in the helmet compartment. Not only is the C13 charging socket located there, there are also sockets for accessing the vehicle controls and the charger. The easy accessibility of this connection is important for service, as software updates are installed or the fault memory is read out via this interface.
Last but not least is the unlocking of the parking brake in the helmet compartment. Once it is locked, no one can push the vehicle away. The hinge that connects the tailgate and the bottom of the helmet compartment is firmly riveted and is also used in piano construction. They are only sold together.
Good to know:
The recesses on the tailgate next to the hinge are intentional. Not for ventilation, but so that the charging cable can be passed through. This makes it possible to lock the tailgate with the key while charging is in progress.
