Object of the week: Steering damper
As a child, we rode our bikes hands-free. When doing so, it happened time and again that the handlebars began to "flutter" strongly, i.e. to bounce back and forth. These vibrations could also occur with our tricycles. The dangerous and unpleasant phenomenon is prevented by the steering damper.
The steering damper is an oil pressure system. An aluminium cylinder filled with oil with a continuous steel rod. A piston with small holes is pressed back and forth on this rod with every steering movement. The oil flows from one chamber to the other. Since the passages are very small, the piston can only move slowly. The faster you try to move the piston, the more back pressure it builds up.
Practically all motorbikes on the market today are equipped with steering dampers. At KYBURZ, these are the DXP, DXS and DXC models. With slower types, the "flutter" occurs less.
